We offer recreation swim activities year round at our two indoor pools W.G. Johnson and John Dolson and through the summer at two outdoor pools George Hancock and Ed Newland.

Swim Admissions Process

RED BANDS - (0 to 5 years old)

  • All children under the age of 6 must swim in the shallow end with a Parent or Guardian aged 13 years or older.
  • Children under 6 years old must remain within direct supervision and within arms' reach.
  • Maximum of 2 children under 6 years old for 1 Parent or Guardian (1:2 ratio).

YELLOW BANDS - (6 to 10 years old)

  • Children aged 6 to 10 years old must swim in the shallow end with a Parent or Guardian aged 13 years or older.
  • Children aged 6 to 10 years old must remain within direct supervision and within arms' reach.
  • Maximum of 4 children aged 6 to 10 years old for 1 Parent or Guardian (1:4 ratio).

GREEN BANDS - (6 to 10 years old)

  • Children aged 6 to 10 years old who pass the Swim Admission Test may swim unaccompanied and access the deep end.
    • Facility Swim Test includes a continuous 30m swim on your front.
  • Children with green bands may be asked to take the swim test again if Aquatics staff are concerned that they cannot demonstrate the ability to maintain the Swim Admission Standard.

Please note that Aquatics staff reserve the right to deny deep end entry to any swimmer if they cannot demonstrate the Swim Admission Standard.

 

Pool Rules

When in attendance for Aquatics programs, please abide by the following rules:

  • No person shall bring glassware on the pool deck or into the pool.
  • No outdoor footwear shall be worn on the pool deck.
  • No person shall engage in boisterous play in or around the pool.
  • One long whistle signals an emergency - please clear the pool area immediately.
  • Please walk on the pool deck.
  • Proper bathing attire must be worn at all times.
  • Infants must wear water proof diapers, no regular diapers are permitted.
  • Please use the age-appropriate change rooms for children aged 6 years and older.
  • Each bather shall take a shower using warm water and soap, and thoroughly rinse off all soap, before entering or re-entering the pool deck.
  • To ensure the privacy of our patrons, cell phones, cameras, or other personal recording devices are not permitted in facility change rooms or on the pool deck.
  • All patrons within City of Cambridge facilities must act within a respectful manner.

Patrons may be asked to leave the Aquatics Facilities if:

  • They fail to comply with the posted rules.
  • They are jeopardizing the safety of themselves or others.
  • They do not accept and recognize the authority of the lifeguard team.

National Drowning Prevention Week 2026

Drowning Prevention Week is a national awareness campaign lead by the Lifesaving Society, which takes place every July. Its purpose is to raise awareness about water safety and to help prevent drowning incidents through education, skill development, and community engagement.

Drowning is fast and silent, but it is also preventable. By learning essential water safety skills, understanding risks, and staying vigilant around water, we can all play a role in keeping our community safe. To learn more about national initiatives, resources, and water safety tips, visit the Lifesaving Society website.

The City of Cambridge is hosting a series of activities throughout the week of July 19-25, 2026 to promote water safety messaging, and to provide summer fun for the community.

Monday, July 20

W.G. Johnson Pool

Theme: Self Rescue

Come swim at the pool and test your ability to complete the Swim to Survive standard: Roll, Tread and Swim to safety! Participants will also learn how to respond safely if they fall through the ice, and practice using clothes as a flotation aid in an emergency!

Tuesday, July 21

Theme: Environmental Conditions

Experience how the dangers of moving water impacts swimming ability and learn the critical factors behind cold water shock and hypothermia.

Wednesday, July 22

2:00pm - 4:00pm & 7:00pm - 8:00pm

John Dolson Pool

Theme: Rescue of Others

Watch a simulated rescue and drowning resuscitation performed by a trained lifeguard. Practice safe entries and exits from the pool and learn to identify proper lifesaving and rescue equipment.

Theme: Swim with a Buddy

Learn the importance of swimming with a buddy by building teamwork and communication skills essential for safe swimming. Get crafty with creating our "buddy" bracelets!

Theme: Personal Flotation Device Safety

Experience how to select the right lifejacket for your activity! Explore buoyancy through hands-on experiments.

Theme: Visit from Buddy the Lifeguard Dog

Come to one of our outdoor pools and meet Buddy the Lifeguard Dog! 

Buddy is the Lifesaving Society's mascot, and will be visiting our outdoor facilities. Buddy would love to get a photo with you to wrap up our National Drowning Prevention Week!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, lockers are available at our pools. Locks are available to rent for $0.25 at W.G Johnson, or you can bring your own lock. Locks must be removed daily.

Our pool facilities have age-appropriate change rooms for children 6 years of age or older.

Water diapers are required for children who are not toileted trained.  Little Swimmers are available for purchase at our pool locations.

Please note that pool fouling results in a pool shutdown of 1 to 13 hours. The Ministry of Health enforces this regulation.

Health Regulations 565/90 states a cleansing shower with soap, from head to toe, must be taken before entering the pool.  We also ask that you take off your shoes before entering shower areas and pool decks.

Yes, we keep items in the lost and found bins at both the John Dolson Centre and the W.G. Johnson Centre for one month. After a month, we clear lost and found items out of the facilities.

We keep pool water temperatures between 82 and 84 degrees.

We encourage parents and guardians to stay and watch their child's swimming lessons from the viewing area.  They are not permitted on the deck area during the lessons.

There are a few options to help find the right swimming level for you, including:

  • Previous progress reports with a swim instructor's recommendation.
  • Swim level assessments during an open swim.
  • Book a time to speak to one of our aquatic staff members at aquatics@cambridge.ca
